2000 Lancer Track and Field
Season in
Review: The Lancer Boys and Girls Varsity ended in 2nd place. The
boys finished with a 6-1overall record and the girls with a 5-2 record. The Frosh/Soph
boys ended up in third place with a 4-3 overall record.
The
Lancers had 12 competitors at the City Finals including Alexis Weatherspoon,
Ronny Weatherspoon, Atiba Wright, Francisco Jones, Shawn Huntsinger, Serina
Matsuda, Rachel Lipton-Swartz, Diana Lacy, Marques Reyes, Ashley Tantousian,
Shannon Hernandez, and Aida Laboriel

The
Lancers were very successful winning 15 individual events. The Lancers were
lead by Alexis Weatherspoon, who won the 100, 200, long jump and triple
jump. Ronny Weatherspoon won the fs 200
and 400 and Serina Matsuda won the fs girls 100 and 300 hurdles. Other winners

The Lancer
varsity and girls entered the track meet needing to pull off victories over
Hollywood and North Hollywood respectively. The varsity of Hollywood and the
girls of North Hollywood came in with undefeated league records with the
Lancers in the way. The Lancers fought a valiant fight, but were unable to deal
with the opponents depth and were left as runner-up in both divisions. The boys
were lead by Atiba Wright and Marlon Cañas, and the ladies by Alexis Weatherspoon.
The Frosh/Soph boys were victorious against both teams and ended
the season on a very positive note. The Final Records for the teams are:
Varsity: 5-2, Girls: 6-1,Frosh/soph: 4-3 for a total winning record of 15-6.
Ronny
Weatherspoon and Marlon Cañas competed in the meet and did well. Ronny ran a
good 52.8 in a tough heat of the 400 and Marlon Cañas PR in the 800 running a
2:07. This two will be very tough to beat in the city Frosh/Soph division.
Alexis posted
season bests in the 100 and 200 with times of 11.74 and 23.99 respectively. She
came in 3 rd in both races.
Alexis Weatherspoon was the only athlete to make it to the
Arcadia Invitational. The junior sensation beat out all the other L.A. city
competitor and placed 6th in the 100 and 5th in the 200
in the state. The junior is scheduled to run next week at the Mt. Sac.
Invitational. Good Luck Alexis!!!!
The Lancer
Varsity and Ladies were victorious on Friday at Poly High. It was an exciting
meet as the Australians joined in for the fun and a little food after the
meet. The Lancer ladies were again lead
by superstar Alexis Weatherspoon, who won the 100, 200, long jump and the
triple jump, beating the Parrots and the Australians handedly. Other winners
for the Ladies include, Rachel Lipton-Swartz, Serena Matsuda, Shannon
Hernandez, and Karla Soriano. The boys
were lead by sophomore Marlon Cañas, who tripled in the 800, mile, and the 2
mile. Carlos Mendez, Perry Clayton, Lior Astrahan, Atiba Wright also had
winning performances. The Frosh /Soph lost to an undefeated Parrot team. The
Lancer Frosh/soph was lead by Domingo Garcia, who won the mile and the 2 mile.
Other winners include, Marques Reyes, Rene Alvarez, Shawn Huntsinger, and Peter
Cardenas. The Varsity is now 4-1, the Ladies 5-0 and the Frosh/Soph is 2-3.
The Lancers
swept the Hunters under the rug, winning the Varsity, Girls and Frosh/Soph
divisions. The Lancers had excellent performances from everyone, considering
the high winds. Leading for the Varsity boys, were “kid flash” himself Ronny
Weatherspoon, winning the 200 and 400, and anchoring the 4x400 relay. Marlon
Cañas won the mile and the 800 for the Lancers. Other first place finishers
include Atiba Wright-Long Jump, Carlos Mendez-shot put, Lior Astrahan-pole
vault, Gabriel Rodriguez-2 mile, Kyrie Nava-300 Hurdles and Perry Clayton-100.
For the undefeated Lady Lancers, Alexis Weatherspoon again shines as she captures
a sweep in her events: 100, 200, Long Jump, and Triple Jump. Serena Matsuda
also had a great performance, winning both the 110 high hurdles and the 330
lows and Rachel Lipton Swartz winning the High Jump and Pole Vault. Others
winning their events include; Karla Soriano-mile. The Frosh/soph collected
their second victory of the year. The Lancers were lead by a Domingo Garcia
winning in the mile and 2-mile and Marques Reyes, winning the 100 and the Pole
Vault. Other first place winners include; Shawn Huntsinger-shot put, Francisco
Jones- 330 Hurdles, Wilmer Muñoz, and -110 Hurdlers. Great Job to all the
Lancers, and good luck as they face Poly High at Poly.
The Lancers
won two of 3 from the Dons, winning the Boys and Girls and losing in the
Frosh/Soph by a very close score. With the gleaming camera of Fox Sports
watching Alexis Weatherspoon, the Ladies crushed the Dons by 50 points The Lady
Lancers were lead by Alexis Weatherspoons 4 event win performance in the 100,
200, Long and Triple Jump. Other standouts were Serena Matsuda in the 300
hurdles, Kenny Najarro in the shot put and Karla Soriano in the mile, Diana
Lacy in High Jump and Cindy Ayvar in the Pole Vault. The Lancer boys went down
to the wire against the Dons squeaking out a victory, 62-63. The meet came down
to the last event, the triple Jump. Jumper Atiba Wright confidently overtook
the Verdugo Jumpers and capped off the victory, by coming in 1st place.
Atiba previously had won the Long Jump and was on the victorious 4x100 relay
team. Ronny Weatherspoon came through
as well, winning the 200, 400, and both relays. Marlon Cañas won the mile and the 800 coming through under 5 min
in the mile. Others winning events were Perry Clayton in the 100. The
Frosh/Soph boys lost by a point 63-62. The Lancers were lead by Domingo Garcia,
who won the mile and 2 mile, Marques Reyes, winning the pole vault, Francisco
Jones, winning the long jump and Danny Ruiz winning the 200. Both Frosh/soph
relay teams were victorious. Next up:
the Canoga Park Hunters
It was a day of highs and lows
for the Lancers who won in the girls division, and lost in the Boys and
Frosh/soph. The Lady Lancers got revenge from last years defeat to the Regents
and stuffed them. The Lancers were lead by Alexis Weatherspoon winning all four
events 100, 200, Long Jump and Triple Jump. Other winners included: Karla
Soriano 2 mile, 1 mile, 800, and Cindy Ayvar in the pole-vault. Great Job
Ladies! The Boys had a tremendous
effort from every member and had even won the meet. The Lancers were
disqualified in the deciding race (mile Relay) for running on to the track to
celebrate before the race was over. Ronny Weatherspoon had run a courageous
race, making up the their lead and over taking the Regents. The victory was so
exiting that every one jumped out to congratulate Ronny. Unfortunately, he was
congratulated before the race was over. The judge disqualified the win and the
Lancers lost 64-59. Event winners were Marlon Cañas 800, mile, and 2 mile,
Ronny Weatherspoon-200, 400, Atiba Wright- Long Jump, Triple Jump Lior
Astrahan- High Jump, and Perry Clayton-100. The Frosh Soph had a disappointing
loss, especially after losing Ronny Weatherspoon to the Varsity. The Lancers
were lead by Domingo Garcia, winning the mile and 2-mile, Rene Alvarez-800,
Francisco Jones-Long Jump, Marques Reyes-100, Pole Vault, and Triple Jump. The
Lancers face the Dons of Verdugo Hills next week.
Van Nuys Wolves
The Lancers started the year in great
fashion sweeping the Wolves of Van Nuys High. The Boys, Girls and Frosh/soph
were all victorious. The Boys were lead by Atiba Wright and Perry Clayton who
won the Long Jump, Triple Jump and the 100 and 200 sprints respectively. Other
event winners include: Marlon Cañas- Mile and Lior Astrahan- Pole Vault, Kyrie
Nava-110 highs. On the girls side the Lancers were lead by Alexis Weatherspoon,
who anchored both relay teams to victory and won her 100 and 200 races. Other event winners were: Karla
Soriano-mile, 2 mile, Shannon Hernandez-400, mile relay, Rachel
Lipton-Swartz-High Jump, Cindy Ayvar- Pole Vault, Deja Cruz- Triple Jump and
Long Jump. The Frosh/ Soph boys were lead by Freshman Ronny Weatherspoon, who
dominated the 100, 200 and both relays. With his great performance, he will be
moved up to varsity next week. Other Frosh/ Soph winners include Darrel
Lawson-high Jump, Francisco Jones-long jump, 300 hurdles and Rene Alvarez-800,
Jon Fonua in the shot put. The Lancers face a very tough opponent next week in
the Regents of Reseda, who thumped the Boys and just beat the girls last year.
