Cleveland and Van Nuys

The Lancers started out the year with a great test against the Boys 2000 L.A. City runner up in Cleveland High school. The Lancer had great performances by Atiba Wright in the Triple Jump with a mark of 43'146;0 and Shawn Huntsinger with a mark of 42’11 in the Shot Put. The Cavaliers were tough to beat in the varsity as the Lancer lost 81-50, but beat Van Nuys 50-28. In The girls division, the Cavaliers were even stronger were the Cavaliers won every event except the Shot Put, were Kareemah Bernard won with a mark of 30’6. The Lancers were without Alexis Weatherspoon, who injured her leg during the first event. On the positive side, Grant did beat Van Nuys for the 4th year in a row by a score of 16-12. The Cavaliers dominated, scoring 126 points in the tri-meet. As for the Frosh/Soph division, the boys came out victorious agaisnt both teams, winning 61-41-40. The Lancers had many stars and pleasant surprises including, Freshman Ricardo Robles in the mile with a winning time of 5:20, and 2:30 in the 800. New comer Sophomore Derrick Smith, winning both the 200 (25.7) and the High Jump (5’5). Sophomore Wilmer Munoz, winning the 300 Hurdles (54.76) and 110 Hurdles (22.89). Freshmen Ryan Campbell surprising with a winning time of 56.2 in the 400, Dmitry Afanasyev winning the Shot Put (36’2) and Rene Rodriguez winning the 2 mile. Records (V 1-1,G 1-1, FS 2-0)

Reseda Regents

Revenge was on the minds of the Lancers as they faced the team that beat them the previous year by a heartbreaking final event disqualification. The Lancers were hard pressed to show them how they have matured since then winning 69-54. Stars included, Atiba Wright winning 3 events Triple Jump (40’7), Long Jump (20’7) 100(11.3) including a leg on the victorious 4x100 relay team(45.3). Ronny Weatherspoon winning the 200 (23.4), 400 (52.2) and anchoring the victorious 4x400 relay team (3:41). Other individual event winners included Shawn Huntsinger-Shot Put (43’11), an outstanding Freshman time by Ricardo Robles in the mile (4:58), along with fellow freshman Jordan Castellanos in the 2 mile (11:21), and rounding it off with Chris Ross in the High Jump (5’4). In the Girls division, the Lancers were beat 95-31. The Lancers had outstanding performances by Kareemah Bernard 100 (14.4) and Pamela Tellez (31.3) in the 200. The Frosh/Soph boys lost by a close score of 54-58. The Lancers lost on a Disqualification in the boys 4x100 race. The boys were running uncontested, but got DQ for running in the wrong lane. Regardless, the F/S was lead by Wilmer Munoz, winning 3 events: 300 Hurdles (54.3), 110 Hurdles (22.4) and the Pole Vault (8’0). AJ Romero won 2 events winning the 100 (11.8) and the Long Jump (16’5). Dmitry Afanasyev won the Shot Put again with a throw of (38’7).

Canoga Park

The Boys Varsity faced their toughest opponent in the league and came out victorious 58-57. The tough meet came down to the last event the Mile Relay, won by Grant(3:46.1). Event winners were: Ronny Weatherspoon 440(52.6)220(23.6), Atiba Wright 100(11.0) Triple Jump (40'10) Long Jump(19'9), and Shawn Huntsinger Shot Put(43'10). The ladies had a tough time with Hunters losing 31-73. Bright Spots for the Lancers were:Kareemah Bernard 100(13.2) and Triple Jump(26'6). The Frosh/Soph boys were also defeated 52-64. Event winners were Aj Romero 100(12.0)Long Jump(17'2), Mario Rangel 300Hurdles(52.5) and Rene Rodriguez 880(2:36.5).

Poly Parrots

The Lancers brought out the broom against Poly winning the Boys, Girls and Frosh/Soph. The Boys Varsity won 78-46. Event winners were Jordan Castellanos(4:58)in the Mile, Atiba Wright in the 100(11.2), Long Jump(21 1/4) and Triple Jump(41'7 1/4), Ronny Weatherspoon 440(52.8), Marques Reyes Pole Vault(9'6), Chris Ross High Jump(5'4), and Shawn Huntsinger Shot Put(42'6).The Lancers also won both relays 440(45.4) and Mile(3:43.6) The Lancer Ladies were victorious against Poly 73-53. First place winners were Rachal Kaufman in the Pole Vault(6'6) and the High Jump(4'0), Shannon Hernandez in the 400(1:10), Kareemah Bernard in the 100(13.9) and the Triple Jump(27'3" 1/4), Pamela Tellez in the 880(2:49) and 220(30.0). Michelle Hairston in the Shot Put(39.1). The Lancer also won both relays 440(56.2) and Mile(4:50.1).The Frosh/Soph boys just barely beat the Parrots 62-61. First Place winners were: Wilmer Munoz 110H(21.2) Pole Vault(9'0), AJ Romero 100(11.7) Long Jump(17'16) and Marlin Romero 220(26.2). The Frosh/Soph also swept the relays Mile(4:05.2) and the 440(50.1).

North Hollywood

The Lancer Varsity took care of the rival Huskies 78-43 for the second year in a row. Stars were: Francisco Jones 120High Hurdles (19.1) 330H(46.91), Ronny Weatherspoon 220(22.97) 440(52.41),Atiba Wright 100(11.03) Long Jump(18'2) Triple Jump(39'4, Marcus Reyes Pole Vault (11'0), Shawn Huntsinger Shot Put(45'6. The Varsity also took the relays:440(44.63)Mile:(3:55.2. The Lancers continued their fustration with the Huskies losing for the 3rd year in a row 44-82. First place winner for the ladies were:Alexis Weatherspoon 100M(12.03)220(26.28), Kareemah Bernard Triple Jump (28'7), Michelle Najarro Pole Vault (6'6).The ladies won the Mile Relay(4:47).The Frosh/Soph defeated the Huskies 68-45 for the 3rd year in a row. Event winners were:Wilmer Munoz120H(21.94), AJ Romero 100(11.8) Long Jump(16'0), Mario Rangel 330H (53.37), Dmitry Afanasyev Shot Put(39'10), Rene Rodriguez 2 mile(12:33). The Frosh/Soph also won the 440 Relay (48.62).

Hollywood

The Lancer varsity crushed the Skeiks 91-18. Event winners were:Jordan Castellanos Mile(5:20)2Mile(11:47), Ronny Weatherspoon 220(23.6)440(53.3), Atiba Wright 100(11.1)Long Jump(18'8) Triple Jump(39'5), Shawn Huntsinger(42'7) and Julius Roberts High Jump(5'6. The Relays were also won by Grant:440(45.4)Mile(3:53.2).The Ladies also dominated the Sheiks 78-20. Event winners were: Maria Doulatova Mile(6:59.2) 2mile(15:11.3), Otilia Lopez 110H(21.9), Alexis Weatherspoon 100(12.9), Michelle Hairston Shot Put (28'4), Pamela Tellez 220 (33.1), Kareemah Bernard Triple Jump(27'3). The Lancers also won the mile relay (5:01.8).The Frosh/Soph finished the days domination beating the Huskies 82-35. Winners were Salvador Pena Mile(5:36.6) 2 Mile(12:27), Keith Hinson High Jump(4'10) 220(26.4), AJ Romero 100(11.7) Long Jump(17'1), Rafael Barlev Shot Put(39'7), Wilmer Munoz Pole Vault(8'). The relays were also won by Grant:440(49.33)Mile(NA.

Verdugo Hills

The Lancer Varsity crushed the Dons 87-29. Winners were Atiba Wright 100(11.23)Long Jump(19'3) Triple Jump(40'1), Julius Roberts 330(46.47), Ronny Weatherspoon 220(23.95) 440(52.87), Chris Ross High Jump(5'7), Jordan Castellanos 880(2:27.41), Ricardo Robles Mile(5:09.97), Shawn Huntsinger Shot Put(45'1/2) and Marques Reyes Pole Vault(11'6).The Ladies also were victorious against the Dons, winning 65-58. Event winners were: Kareemah Bernard Shotput(29'7) 100(13.37) Triple Jump(30'9), Pamela Tellez 880(2:52.83), Alexis Weatherspoon 200(27.46) 400(60.86). The Frosh/Soph lost to the undefeated Don Frosh/Soph 56-71. Winners were: Marlon Romero 400(61.01), Anthony Dickson 100(11.32)220(24.44), Ron Barlev Shot Put(42'6), Wilmer Munoz Pole Vault(10').

L.A. City Championships

The L.A. city championship- Ronny Weatherspoon added another title to last years 200meter title by winning the 400meter race in a time of 51.39. Ronny also competed in the 200meter run, coming in 3rd with a time of 22.94. The time is his personal best. The Frosh/Soph 4x100 came in 2nd in the city behind a record setting Carson team. The time of 43.86 in the race put Israel Salas, Ronny Weatherspoon, Anthony Dickson and Ijiale Romero in the top five all-time in school history. Freshman Anthony Dickson joined the track team the last week of Jordan Castellanos came in 7th in the Frosh/Soph 1600 run with a time of 4:55.26 to cap off a great year for the freshman. The Frosh/Soph 4x400 relay team competed and came in last to a strong field with a time of 3:47.06. Ijiale Romero competed in the Frosh/Soph Long Jump and came in 7th with a distance of 17’05 feet. Marques Reyes represented Grant in the Varsity Pole Vault. Marques narrowly missed making it to State coming in 4th place in the city with a vault of 12’0 feet. Atiba Wright finished his outstanding career in the jumps by jumping 22’ feet in the Long Jump coming in 4th place, and jumping 44’05 in the Triple Jump coming in 7th in city.
